Hawaiian Punch Slushies

Remember being a kid in the middle of July? The pavement was hot enough to fry an egg, the air smelled like cut grass and sunscreen, and the only thing that mattered was obtaining something cold and sugary as fast as possible.

For a lot of us, that “something” was Hawaiian Punch. That distinct, bright red fruit punch flavor is practically a core childhood memory. It stained our mouths, fueled our sugar rushes, and was the absolute highlight of any birthday party.

Well, good news: you’re an adult now (mostly), which means you have access to a blender and can turn that childhood favorite into the ultimate frozen treat whenever you want.

The Secret Science of the Slush

You might look at the ingredients list and wonder, “Why add sugar if the juice is already sweet?”

It’s a valid question! But here is a little kitchen science for you. When you blend ice, you are essentially watering down the flavor of the juice. If you just blended ice and Hawaiian Punch, you’d end up with a watery, bland slush that separates almost immediately—liquid at the bottom, dry ice chunks at the top.

The added sugar does two important things:

  1. It boosts the flavor: Cold temperatures dull our taste buds. The extra sugar ensures the punch flavor stays bold and vibrant even when frozen.
  2. It improves texture: Sugar lowers the freezing point of water and creates friction. This helps the ice blend into a smooth, cohesive slush rather than a chunky, icy mess. It’s the glue that holds the slushie together.

The Recipe: 3-Minute Hawaiian Punch Slushies

Ready to get your slush on? Grab your blender and let’s do this.

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups Ice: Standard ice cubes from your freezer tray work perfectly.
  • 1 Cup Hawaiian Punch: Go for the classic Fruit Juicy Red for the nostalgia factor, or mix it up with whatever flavor you have.
  • ¼ Cup White Granulated Sugar: This is crucial for that smooth texture we just talked about.

Equipment Needed

  • Powerful Blender: A high-speed blender (like a Vitamix or Ninja) makes this easiest, but a standard blender works too.
  • Tamper: If your blender came with that black plastic stick tool, get it ready. It’s a lifesaver for thick blends.

Directions

Toss the ice, Hawaiian Punch, and sugar into your blender pitcher.

Turn the blender on high. If you have a tamper, use it to push the ice down into the blades (while the lid is on!) to keep everything moving. If you don’t have a tamper and the blades get stuck spinning in an air pocket, turn the blender off, give it a stir with a long spoon, and start again.

Let it run for about a minute. You are looking for a uniform texture where you can’t see any individual ice chunks. It should look like a thick, snowy paste.

Pour into glasses right away. Grab a straw—or a spoon—and enjoy before it melts!

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups Ice
  • 1 Cup Hawaiian Punch
  • ¼ Cup Sugar

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a powerful blender. If necessary, use a tamper to stir the ingredients as they blend.
  • Blend until smooth, about a minute.
  • Pour into glasses and drink right away.

Notes

  • I use a tamper for my blender because it’s not quite as powerful as I like it. It’s an older model, so you might not have to use one. However, if you have trouble with your blender not wanting to blend the ingredients, it should have come with a tamper you can use to keep the ice and ingredients moving for a nice smooth blend. That’s its entire purpose.
  • You can add more juice if desired, but remember, more juice means a thinner slushie. This is totally preference based, so it’s up to you.
  • The Hawaiian Punch brand has a ton of flavors. Feel free to use any flavor you like.
  • You cannot make these ahead of time. They need to be consumed immediately upon being made. They will melt if left in the fridge and they will freeze as solid as a block of ice if stored in the freezer.
  • The sugar aspect of this recipe is important because it helps the ice, once blended, to mix with the liquid. Without sugar, the two will fight to meld together. A mini science lesson, if you will.
